Q: Please describe the role you play in
hiring in your organization?
A: I am the Corporate Recruiter and I work in the Corporate
offices in Pasadena, CA. I was brought in to help streamline
the hiring processes, to implement and initiate new recruiting
strategies for our 270 Tetra Tech offices world-wide.
Q: How has hiring changed in today's technological
environment?
A: I think the Internet has been the most substantial
change. It is much faster and easier to locate candidates,
submit job postings and set up interviews with potential candidates
in today's market. Another change that can be attributed to
technology is the shortage of candidates. Because of the ever
changing technology, it is difficult in locating candidates
with these specific skill requirements.
Q: What is the toughest challenge facing
your organization in terms of finding strong candidates?
A: Since we are very specialized, we have difficulty
in locating candidates who have the specific skill requirements
and expertise. This can also make Internet Recruiting Sites
a challenge; some of these sites do not attract the kind of
candidates we are seeking.
Q: What are the key factors in evaluating
candidates in today's workplace?
A:That their resume is consistent with what they are
seeking in a position. For example, if a candidate has experience
in several industries and/or positions, it is helpful for
them to gear their resume for a specific target position.
If you are seeking an Environmental Engineering position,
please put the specifications that this position would entail:
i.e. soil testing etc. If you are also seeking a position
in Human Resources, soil testing is something you may want
to leave out unless you are targeting an Environmental Organization.
Q: In your particular industry, what are
the top two employment related challenges you face?
A:
- Locating candidates with specific skill sets. As I previously
mentioned, we are very specialized, so it can be hard to
find candidates. However, if a candidate meets most of the
requirements or is a student out of college and has the
right attitude, we are willing to train.
- Retention: With the unemployment rate so low, it is still
an employees market. Tetra Tech has been successful in keeping
good employees. The company values the input of it's team
members. In addition we have a great team environment, a
comfortable workplace and an excellent benefit package.
Q:
Give us some basic "do's and don't" that you have picked up
over the years in relation to good interviewing?
A:
- Be prepared for the interview. Make sure that you review
the resume just prior to the interview and have specific
questions you would like to ask the candidate about their
work history, experience, skills etc.
- Try to acknowledge the candidate upon their arrival and
try not to keep the candidate waiting for their interview.
- Just as you are interviewing the candidate, keep in mind
that they are also interviewing you and your corporation.
You are representing your company, so make sure you have
a good presentation. Include any pertinent information that
you think would be helpful in a candidate's employment decision.
Q:
What is the best resume tip you can give to our audience?
A: Check your resume for misspelled words and proper
grammar. One thing that always drives me crazy on resumes
is not using correct grammar or having several misspelled
words appear on the resume. In addition to utilizing spellchecker,
you should always proofread your resume for any mistakes.
You may also want to have someone else review your resume.
The second is, of course, attitude. I would much rather hire
someone that has a little less skill and the best attitude
rather than an expert who cannot work with his/her teammates
or does not have enthusiasm for the company. We have built
an amazing, team oriented work environment by hiring people
who are passionate about their work and are thrilled to be
a part of our team.
Q: What specifics should we know about
Tetra Tech and your plans for growth?
A: Founded in 1966, Tetra Tech has three specific business
units: Resource Management, Infrastructure and Communications.
We continue to execute our focused strategy in our business
areas in accordance with our goal to be the leader in the
markets we serve. In Resource Management, we further strengthened
our leadership role in high growth segments of water quality
and watershed management. Our growth was particularly strong
in our Infrastructure and Communications businesses as we
carried out the strategy we began several years ago to become
a strong player in these growth businesses. This balance of
three equally strong business provides greater stability in
a changing business environment. Tetra Tech is a publicly
traded company (NASDAQ Symbol: TTEK). The
company continues to position itself in growth sectors, acquire
regional firms and vertically integrate our services.
Q:
What is the best way for candidates to reach you? What type
of information should they include and what type of "homework"
should they do?
A: Candidates can view our open positions and apply
on-line by visiting our Employment Opportunities. This can
be viewed on our Website www.tetratech.com.
or they may submit their resume to
jobs@tetratech.com. When applying for a position, they
should send their resume, the position they are applying for,
along with salary requirements and office locations that they
may be interested in working at.
